Ex-Servicemen Welfare benefits 2026: Pension help, ₹8,000 grant, scholarships and Zila Sainik Board services

For many ex-servicemen, retirement brings a new challenge: understanding pension procedures, accessing financial assistance and securing educational benefits for their children. Even eligible families sometimes experience delays because of incorrect documents or limited awareness of government schemes.

This is where the Zila Sainik Board (ZSB) plays an important role. It helps veterans, widows and dependents navigate welfare procedures and connect with the appropriate government or military authorities.

How can Zila Sainik Board help ex-servicemen?

A District Sainik Welfare Office acts as a local support centre for former Armed Forces personnel and their families.

Its responsibilities include guiding veterans through registration, pension-related documentation, welfare applications, employment opportunities and coordination with service Record Offices.

For widows and Veer Naris, assistance may involve family pension claims, correction of records and identification of applicable financial support.

However, the Zila Sainik Board generally assists with verification and processing; final approval depends on the competent authority and scheme conditions.

Which financial benefits are available in 2026?

The Ministry of Defence provides several welfare grants through the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB).

Importantly, the government doubled three major assistance amounts with effect from applications submitted on or after 1 November 2025.

Welfare schemeFinancial assistanceMain beneficiaries
Penury Grant₹8,000 per monthEligible non-pensioner veterans aged above 65 and qualifying widows without regular income
Education Grant₹2,000 per month per childUp to two eligible children, Class 1 to graduation
PM Scholarship Scheme₹30,000 yearly for boys; ₹36,000 for girlsSelected eligible students pursuing recognised professional courses
Marriage Grant₹1,00,000 per beneficiaryEligible daughters of ex-servicemen and widow remarriage, subject to scheme conditions

The Education Grant also covers eligible widows pursuing a two-year postgraduate course.

The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is different from the Education Grant. PMSS is merit-based, generally requires at least 60% marks in the qualifying examination and provides 5,500 fresh scholarships annually.

These benefits are not automatically available to every veteran’s family. Rank, service status, income, academic requirements and other scheme-specific conditions must be satisfied.

Which documents should veterans keep ready?

Incomplete or mismatched records are among the practical difficulties discussed by former District Sainik Welfare Officer Wg Cdr (Retd.) Ranjan Mukherjee.

Before approaching the appropriate welfare office, veterans should prepare:

  • Discharge Book and Ex-Serviceman Identity Card

  • Pension Payment Order (PPO), where applicable

  • Aadhaar and PAN details

  • Bank account particulars

  • KSB registration details

  • Relevant family and dependent records

Widows may additionally require the deceased veteran’s service documents, death certificate, marriage or relationship proof and family-pension records.

Names, dates of birth and other personal details should match across documents. Discrepancies should be reported to the appropriate authority for correction.

Why do some widows face pension delays?

During a Sainik Welfare News discussion, Wg Cdr (Retd.) Ranjan Mukherjee recalled a widow who reportedly remained without pension for approximately seven years because of documentation difficulties and lack of awareness.

According to his account, an ex-servicemen association eventually helped her approach the District Sainik Welfare Office.

The experience highlights the importance of maintaining accurate family records and informing dependents about pension entitlements before an emergency arises.

Families should report a pensioner’s death through the prescribed procedure and seek guidance on converting the entitlement to the applicable family pension.

Where can ex-servicemen check and claim benefits?

Veterans can begin by visiting the official Kendriya Sainik Board website at ksb.gov.in and contacting their concerned Zila or Rajya Sainik Board.

They should review the eligibility conditions, required documents and application procedure for the specific scheme.

Ex-servicemen associations, official notice boards and district-level welfare communication channels can also help families learn about new circulars and assistance programmes.

The most effective approach is simple: keep service records updated, inform family members about available benefits and contact the welfare authorities before documentation problems become serious.
