The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a 78-day Productivity Linked Bonus (PLB) for Indian Railways employees for the financial year 2025–26.
According to the Press Information Bureau (PIB) announcement issued on 14 October 2026, 11,40,770 Railway employees will benefit from the decision, involving a total expenditure of ₹2,009.61 crore. The maximum bonus payable to each eligible employee is ₹17,951.
While the bonus ceiling remains unchanged from last year, the latest approval covers nearly 50,000 additional employees.
Who is eligible for Railway Bonus 2026?
The approved PLB covers eligible non-gazetted Railway employees, including Track Maintainers, Loco Pilots, Train Managers (Guards), Station Masters, Supervisors, Technicians, Technician Helpers, Pointsmen, Ministerial staff and other Group C employees.
The government has announced ₹17,951 as the maximum individual bonus, meaning the actual entitlement will depend on applicable eligibility and calculation rules.
The scheme rewards employees for their contribution to Railway operations and overall organisational performance.
Railway Bonus 2025 vs 2026: What has changed?
A comparison of the two official Cabinet announcements reveals an important development: government expenditure has increased, but the maximum amount payable to an individual employee has not.
The latest allocation is ₹143.93 crore higher, representing an increase of approximately 7.7%. Meanwhile, the number of beneficiaries has grown by 49,624.
The key observation: More Railway employees are covered under the 2026 approval, but the maximum individual bonus remains fixed at the previous year’s level.
Indian Railways’ performance behind the bonus approval
The government has linked the PLB decision to the Railways’ operational performance during 2025–26.
Indian Railways transported a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight and carried approximately 7.41 billion passengers during the financial year.
Freight loading increased from 1,614.90 million tonnes in 2024–25, reflecting an additional 55.10 million tonnes of cargo movement.
These figures provide the performance context for the government’s decision to recognise the contribution of Railway employees.
When will the 78-day Railway Bonus be paid?
The government has stated that PLB is normally paid to eligible Railway employees before the Durga Puja and Dussehra holidays, and the same practice applies this year.
However, the 14 October PIB announcement does not specify an exact bank-credit date. Employees should follow their respective Railway administration’s instructions for payment details.
This approval is specifically for Railway PLB and does not constitute an announcement of revised DA/DR rates or changes under the 8th Central Pay Commission.
What does this decision mean for Railway employees?
The 2026 approval maintains the established 78-day bonus benefit while extending coverage to a larger number of employees.
Although the overall financial commitment has increased, the unchanged ₹17,951 ceiling remains the most significant point when comparing the latest decision with last year’s announcement.
