Retired defence couple loses ₹76.22 lakh in digital arrest scam in Pune

A retired defence couple from Chikhali, Pune, has reportedly lost ₹76.22 lakh after falling victim to a sophisticated “digital arrest” cyber fraud in September 2026.

The fraudsters allegedly posed as police officials, accused the couple of being linked to a criminal case and gradually convinced them to transfer their savings for so-called verification.

The incident once again shows how scammers are using fear, fake authority and official-looking documents to target pensioners and senior citizens.

How did the fraud begin?

According to the reported complaint, the scam started on 2 September 2026, when a 68-year-old woman received a video call from a person claiming to be associated with Mumbai Police.

The caller allegedly told her that a SIM card obtained using her Aadhaar details had been linked to several complaints.

The story then became more serious. She was reportedly told that her identity was connected to a money-laundering case and was shown what appeared to be an arrest warrant.

The fraudsters allegedly instructed her to remain on video call and not discuss the matter with anyone else.

Couple was allegedly asked about savings and jewellery

Once the victims were frightened, the callers reportedly started asking about their financial position, including:

  • bank deposits,
  • fixed deposits,
  • savings, and
  • gold jewellery.

The couple were allegedly told that their money needed to be transferred for “verification”.

They then arranged funds by breaking fixed deposits and using their jewellery.

The money was reportedly sent to different bank accounts after the victims were assured that the funds were being checked as part of an official investigation.

The fraudsters also allegedly sent receipts to make the transactions appear genuine.

Fraud discovered after communication stopped

The suspected fraud came to light after communication with the callers stopped.

The woman then approached Chikhali Police Station, following which a cyber-fraud case was registered and investigation initiated.

The case shows how so-called digital-arrest scams can continue for several days because victims are kept under continuous psychological pressure.

There is no legal concept called ‘digital arrest’

One of the most important facts for pensioners and senior citizens to remember is that “digital arrest” is not a recognised legal procedure in India.

Genuine law-enforcement authorities do not place citizens under arrest through WhatsApp or video calls and do not ask them to transfer money into bank accounts for “verification”.

So if someone says:

“You are under digital arrest”

that itself should be treated as a major warning sign.

What should you do if such a call comes?

The safest response is simple:

Disconnect the call.

Do not transfer money, share OTPs or reveal details of bank deposits, pension accounts or jewellery.

If the caller claims to represent a police or Government agency, independently contact that organisation through its official number.

Family members should also be informed immediately, especially when the caller insists that the conversation must remain secret.

Already transferred money? Act immediately

If money has already been sent, the victim should report the incident without delay through the national cybercrime helpline:

1930

A complaint can also be submitted through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal — cybercrime.gov.in.

Screenshots, phone numbers, chats, bank-transfer receipts and beneficiary-account details should be preserved for investigation.

Key takeaway for pensioners and veterans

The Pune case shows that fraudsters do not always begin by asking for money.

They first create fear.

Then they isolate the victim.

Finally, they ask for financial details and money transfers.

The most important rule is simple:

No genuine Government investigation requires you to secretly transfer your savings for “verification”.

If a caller uses words such as Aadhaar misuse, money laundering, arrest warrant or digital arrest, do not panic.

Disconnect. Verify. Speak to someone you trust.
